Uses
AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) is used to reduce high blood pressure, to treat heart failure and as a maintenance therapy after a myocardial infarction. It works by targeting the beta receptors in the heart muscles and smooth muscles. By disrupting the process in which the stress hormones noradrenaline and adrenaline bind to their receptors, it can help to reduce the response of the body to stress, leading to a reduction in the heart rate and blood pressure.
In addition to the conditions listed above, this medicine also has other indications. When used for angina pectoris, it has been shown to lessen the occurrence and severity of angina attacks, while also increasing the capacity to exercise. Certain doctors have also use it as a prophylactic (preventative) for migraine, however it is not used for migraine attacks. Clinical signs of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) can also be alleviated with this medicine. Some studies have even taken place to further determine its effects if used for social anxiety disorder.
Dosage and Administration
AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) comes in the form of film coated 23.75mg controlled release tablets. After it is taken, it is fully absorbed. In all cases, the dosage will be tailored to suit the individual needs of the patient. Deciding the right dosage is the responsibility of the doctor providing medical treatment. Patients treating chronic heart failure may be told to start treatment with 23.75mg per day for week one of treatment (however, some patients may be only told to take a half tablet per day).
This may be adjusted by the doctor until the target dosage is achieved. Careful and consistent monitoring of the patient will be needed. Adults treating hypertension or any other condition may be told to take a different amount of medicine, and it will be necessary for them to follow the directions of their doctor.
