Uses
GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is a muscle relaxant indicated for the treatment of chest pain occurring as a result of an angina attack or for the prevention of angina attacks caused by chronic stable angina. After administration, conversion of the main ingredient into nitric oxide occurs. This helps to trigger an opening of the blood vessels, thereby decreasing resistance inside them and making it easier for the blood to reach the heart. This also reduces some of the strain on the heart.
As a result of this, the chest pain experienced during an angina attack can be quickly relieved with this medicine. It can also help to prevent an anticipated attack of angina triggered by exercising or preforming physical tasks. Clinical trials have been conducted which showed that it was effective in the treatment or prophylaxis of angina.
Dosage and Administration
GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is administered sublingually (meaning that it is meant to be sprayed underneath or onto the tongue). This aerosol contains enough medication for 200 doses, and each metered dose contains 0.4mg of medicine. Your doctor may instruct you to use it at the occurrence of an angina attack, or else 5 to 10 minutes prior to exercise or physical activity that may cause an angina attack. In all cases, determining the correct amount of medicine needed as well as the frequency of use will be the responsibility of your doctor. While using this medicine, the patient may be required to rest or sit down. Should pain in the chest continue after use of the medicine, immediate medical care will be necessary.
