Uses
Losartan (Losartan Potassium) works by inhibiting the effects of angiotensin II. It is used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney problems associated with type 2 diabetes. Angiotensin II is a type of peptide hormone which is responsible for causing vasoconstriction (tightening of the blood vessels) and the retention of fluids and salt by the kidneys. This medicine's mechanism of action involves preventing angiotensin II from binding to its receptors, which in turn helps to block its aldosterone secreting effects, while also stopping it from narrowing the blood vessels. As a result of this, blood pressure can be lowered.
Dosage and Administration
Losartan (Losartan Potassium) comes in the form of tablets for oral administration. Adults undergoing treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure) may be directed to administer 50mg per day (however a lower dosage may be used to treat those with intravascular volume depletion). In some cases, the doctor may decide to increase the dosage to 100mg, taken once per day. Generally, the full benefits of treatment will be noticeable 3 to 6 weeks after treatment begins. Other conditions may need to be treated with a different dosage.
