Uses
Bricanyl (Terbutaline) is given to help reverse or prevent bronchospasms in patients suffering from asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or other related breathing conditions. This medicine functions as a bronchodilator (meaning that it opens up the airways) and it belongs to the beta-adrenergic agonist group of medicines. Medical analysis has shown that this medicine stimulates an enzyme known as adenyl cyclise through the beta-adrenergic receptors, which results in increased cAMP (cyclic 3', 5'-adenosine monophosphate).
This in turn helps to relax the bronchial smooth muscle, and it can also help inhibit the release of substances from the mast cells which may cause hypersensitivity. Its bronchodilator activity has also been shown to last for as long as 8 hours in medical studies. Treatment can effectively help to prevent the occurrence of wheezing and breathlessness, while also making it easier for air to enter and exit the lungs.
Dosage and Administration
Bricanyl (Terbutaline) is provided as 2.5mg strength tablets which are intended to be taken by mouth. Deciding the correct dosage will be the responsibility of the doctor. Adults are sometimes told by the doctor providing medical treatment to take 5mg at roughly 6 hour intervals, for a total of 3 times per day (while the patient is awake). However, should the side effects prove excessive, the doctor may decrease the patient's dosage to 2.5mg 3 times per day. Patients must not exceed the daily dosage recommended by their doctor.
Side effects
Patients should take note of the fact that Bricanyl (Terbutaline) can trigger side effects, which may include:
Certain side effects are serious and will require that the patient gets immediate help from a doctor. However, these reactions are usually considered to be a less common occurrence. Examples include seizures, a worsening of breathing difficulties, throat discomfort and other severe side effects that have not been listed here.
Precautions
This medicine is not suitable for use in women who are pregnant due to the risks posed by this.
Patients who are taking an MAOI or who have used one in the last 14 days must not take this medicine as a serious drug reaction may occur. Talk to your doctor about this before beginning treatment.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Bricanyl (Terbutaline) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
