Uses
Orcibest (Orciprenaline Sulfate BP) is used to widen the airways in patients with bronchial asthma and to treat reversible bronchospasms caused by either emphysema or bronchitis. This medicine belongs to the beta 2 adrenergic receptor agonist class of medicines, and is known to act on various receptors throughout the body, especially in the lungs. Its mode of action is relaxing the bronchial smooth muscles so as to allow the airways to open up.
This in turn helps to reverse the narrowing of airways that occurs as a result of asthma and other breathing conditions. Clearing up obstruction in the airways therefore allows for easier breathing. In addition to this, it can also inhibit the release of mediators of hypersensitivity from the mast cells. The aforementioned pharmacologic effects are achieved as a result of the action of an enzyme known as intracellular adenyl cyclise on the beta adrenergic receptors.
