Cardizem CD

Uses
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) is indicated for the control of angina and the treatment of hypertension. It works by affecting the movement of calcium in the body. This medicine is known as a calcium channel blocker, and is sometimes referred to as a calcium antagonist or calcium ion cellular influx inhibitor. When administered, it inhibits the calcium channels which are found in the muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This prevents them from contracting, and allows for wider blood vessels and also leads to a slower heart rate.

The reduction of vascular resistance is where this medicine derives its antihypertensive effects, and treatment can lead to a drop in blood pressure. Patients affected by angina may experience an increased ability to exercise, and this could be related to the medicine reducing the heart's demand for oxygen and its workload, as well as its other effects. Medical research has also been conducted to study its effects if used for migraine prophylaxis (prevention).

Dosage and Administration
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) is provided as 180mg controlled delivery capsules for oral administration. The capsules must be swallowed whole and not crushed, as doing so could affect the extended release mechanism. Your doctor may need to make adjustments to the dosage regimen, so as to achieve the most effective results. Patients taking this medicine on its own (monotherapy) for the treatment of hypertension may be told by their doctor to begin with a dosage ranging from 180mg to 240mg per day, however, it is possible that some people may be treated with a lower dosage. After 14 days, the maximum effects are normally achieved. Some conditions may be treated with a different dosage.

Side effects
Patients who undergo medical treatment with Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) may experience some side effects, such as:

• Fatigue
• Coughing
• Blocked nose
• Warm sensation
• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

While you are undergoing treatment, it is important that any side effects you experience are promptly reported to your doctor. Attend the hospital or consult your doctor straight away if you suffer from any serious side effects, such as skin blisters, inflammation of the limbs, appetite reduction, bruising, angina symptoms which are more frequent or any other severe side effects.

Precautions
The consumption of grapefruit or other products which contain it could trigger a reaction, and may be dangerous. Ask your doctor about this before beginning treatment.

This medicine can make the skin more likely to become sunburned.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.

• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
