Uses
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) is used to manage angina. It works by blocking the calcium channels. Although it is normally categorized as a calcium channel blocker, some experts also refer to it as a calcium ion cellular influx inhibitor. In general, angina can occur due to coronary artery spasms or physical exertion. This medicine is effective at dilating the coronary arteries, which in turn may explain how it prevents angina caused by coronary artery spasms.
As well as this, medical studies have shown that it can increase the body's tolerance for exercise, which experts believe is because it reduces the heart rate and blood pressure during exercise, so as to lessen the heart's demand for oxygen. These therapeutic benefits are derived from it preventing the influx of calcium ions into the heart and blood vessels. Because calcium can tighten the muscle cells, the inhibition of it helps to widen them.
Dosage and Administration
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) is provided as 240mg strength controlled delivery tablets which come in a calendar pack. Your doctor will carefully calculate the right dosage based on your individual symptoms, however you will be told to take it according to the instructions on the pack.
Adults taking it for the prophylaxis (prevention) of angina are often directed to take a dosage which may range from 120mg to 240mg as a starting dose. This may be increased by the doctor, and the maintenance dosage is normally 240mg to 360mg per day. Congestive heart failure, supraventricular tachycardia, high blood pressure and other conditions are also treated with this medicine, however, in all case patients will need to follow the instructions of their doctor.
