Uses
Cleocin Vaginal Cream (Clindamycin) is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina (also called bacterial vaginitis). The active ingredient in this cream belongs to a group of medicines known as lincomycin antibiotics, and it treats the infection by preventing the bacteria from forming cell walls, which are essential to their survival. This leads to the eventual destruction of the bacteria. Patients should note that this cream should not be used to treat irritation that has been caused by yeast infections, trichomoniasis or chlamydia.

Dosage and Administration
Cleocin Vaginal Cream (Clindamycin) is applied to the inside of the vagina. Your doctor will provide specific application instructions, and you may also refer to the packaging for further information. In most cases, patients are told to apply the cream at bedtime, for 3 consecutive days (7 days in some cases). It is important to ensure that you continue using the cream for the entire period of time that your doctor told you to use it for, otherwise your symptoms may return.

Side effects
Treatment with Cleocin Vaginal Cream (Clindamycin) may sometimes cause:

  • Headache
  • Painful urination
  • Irritation of the vagina
  • A white discharge from the vagina
  • Inflammation affecting the neck of the patient's uterus

If you are bothered by any side effects, you should tell your doctor. Serious reactions are possible. You should immediately consult your doctor if you notice bloody stools, stomach cramps, blisters, fever, changes in urination or any other signs that you are suffering from a serious side effect.

Precautions
Doctors generally instruct their patients to avoid vaginal sexual intercourse while using this cream. Tampons, douches and other vaginal products should also be avoided.

There is a certain mineral oil in this cream which can weaken latex condoms, contraceptive diaphragms and other products made from latex or rubber. Using these products within a 72 hour period of using this cream may render them ineffective.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Cleocin Vaginal Cream (Clindamycin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
