Uses
Clofranil (Clomipramine) is used to treat OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), depression and other related mental disorders. It may also be used to treat cataplexy (muscle weakness) in certain patients. The active ingredient in this medicine is a type of tricyclic antidepressant, which acts on the neurotransmitters in the brain, thereby helping to provide relief from depression and mental conditions. It can also block certain receptors in the body, helping to prevent agitation and anxiety.
Patients with OCD who take this medicine may notice relief from compulsive behaviour and the need to perform repetitive tasks. This medicine has been the subject of much medical research to determine whether or not it is an effective treatment for premature ejaculation.
Dosage and Administration
Clofranil (Clomipramine) comes in the form of tablets. All patients need to consult their doctor before treatment can begin. It is possible that adults treating depression or obsessive compulsive disorder may be prescribed an initial dosage of 25mg, to be taken once per day, at bedtime. During the first 2 weeks of treatment, the dosage may be adjusted, and a maintenance dosage of 100mg may be prescribed. The maximum dose is 250mg per day, however, doctors will generally prescribe lower doses than this. After you visit your doctor, you must only take the amount of medication that was prescribed to you.
Side effects
Taking Clofranil (Clomipramine) can sometimes result in side effects, including:
Inform the prescribing doctor of any side effects which occur. During treatment, it is possible that some serious reactions which require immediate medical attention may occur. See your doctor immediately if you notice eye pain, hallucinations, bladder problems, stiff muscles, signs of an infection or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.
Precautions
Although antidepressant medications can treat depression and mental conditions in some patients, there is a possibility that some patients may experience a worsening of depression and even suicidal thoughts. You are advised to discuss all possible risks with your doctor before starting treatment.
Patients should never take MAO inhibitors 2 weeks before taking this medicine, during treatment, and after finishing treatment, as a serious drug reaction may occur as a result of this.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Clofranil (Clomipramine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
