Uses
Sertima (Sertraline) is an antidepressant used for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women, anxiety and other conditions. Its active ingredient is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). According to medical researchers, this drug`s mechanism of action may be because of its ability to inhibit the uptake of serotonin in the brain. In addition to this, it can also function as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor.
The inhibition of serotonin reuptake allows for the serotonin that is released to have a prolonged effect on the mood, which is an important factor in the treatment of depression. Patients suffering from depression treated with it may experience an overall improvement in mood and energy levels. Clinical trials have also been conducted on this medicine, based on its efficacy if used to treat premature ejaculation, schizophrenia and other conditions not mentioned here.
Dosage and Administration
Sertima (Sertraline) is provided in the form of 100mg tablets which are taken by means of oral administration. In general, the dosage will differ from patient to patient, with the exact condition being treated and the patient`s medical history being the primary factors used by the doctor in charge to calculate the dosage. Some adult patients may be told that the dosage for depression is 50mg taken once per day for the initial period of treatment.
The doctor may adjust the dosage by increasing it in increments of 50mg (but this will not take place more than once per week). Doctors generally state that the maximum dosage is 200mg per day, however this dosage may not be necessary for all patients. Patients must not change the dosage regimen unless the doctor directs them to.
Side effects
Possible side effects which patients undergoing medical treatment with Sertima (Sertraline) could include:
It is of the utmost importance that your doctor is informed of any side effects that occur during treatment. Patients should take note of the fact that serious reactions which have the potential to cause severe problems could occur. You must go to the hospital or see your doctor immediately if you experience hallucinations, blurred vision, tremors, perspiration, severely rigid muscles or any other reactions that have not been listed here.
Precautions
Sudden stoppage of treatment could trigger withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor may incrementally reduce your dosage over a specified period of time in order to avoid this.
Certain patients, and in particular those who are younger could be more at risk of suicidal thoughts or self harm. If this happens, immediately see a doctor straight away.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Sertima (Sertraline) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
