Uses
Copegus (Ribavirin) is an antiviral medicine which is used as a treatment for Hepatitis C infection. The active ingredient, ribavirin, is a type of nucleoside analogue, and must be used on combination with interferon alfa or peginterferon alfa for it to be effective. Taking this medication causes a decrease in the amount of hepatitis C RNA in the patient's body, thereby leading to a reduced amount of damage done to the liver, while also helping to improve the function of the liver.

Dosage and Administration
Copegus (Ribavirin) comes in the form of tablets, each of which contain 200mg of the active ingredient. You will be given clear and concise instructions with regard to dosage, and it is important that you listen carefully to your doctor's directions. Treatment may last for 24 to 48 weeks (or as your doctor deems necessary). In addition to this, you will be told what other medication that you need to take (such as peginterferon alfa or interferon alfa), as well as how often you need to take it.

Side effects
Possible unwanted side effects of Copegus (Ribavirin) include:

• Itchy skin
• Loss of hair
• Sore muscles
• A reduction in weight
• Problems related to sleeping, concentration and memory

Inform your doctor of any side effects that you notice. Although it is rare, severe reactions can occur. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice extreme mood changes, suicidal thoughts, stools containing blood, severe pain in the back or stomach, discoloured urine or any other symptoms which indicate that you are suffering from a serious side effect.

Precautions
Prior to the commencement of treatment, blood tests will be required in order to measure haemoglobin levels as well as kidney and liver function. Your doctor will require a repeat of these tests 2 weeks after treatment starts, and again, 2 weeks later. It may also be necessary to conduct these tests regularly throughout the entire duration of treatment.

Side effects related to the teeth and gums may occur as a result of treatment for hepatitis C. You are advised to attend regular dental checkups, and to inform your doctor and dentist of the treatment you are currently undergoing.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Copegus (Ribavirin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
