Uses
Rebetol (Ribavirin) is used together with peginterferon alfa or interferon alfa as a treatment for chronic hepatitis C. This virus infects the liver, causing damage to it. When inside the liver, it also starts to multiply. Treatment with this medicine (in combination with interferon alfa or peginterferon alfa) reduces the volume of the hepatitis C virus in the body, and also decreases liver damage. It may even to help improve the liver function.

Dosage and Administration
Rebetol (Ribavirin) is not effective at treating hepatitis C if it is used on its own. It must be combined with interferon alfa or peginterferon alfa in order to be effective. Your doctor will tell you what other medicines you need to take (besides this one). He or she will also provide you with clear and concise dosage instructions, which must be strictly adhered to. Only take the amount of medicine that your doctor tells you to take, and never exceed the prescribed dose.

Side effects
Rebetol (Ribavirin) may cause:

  • Hair loss
  • Loss of weight
  • Taste disturbances
  • Muscular or bone pain
  • Menorrhagia or dysmenorrhoea in female patients

Serious reactions which require immediate medical attention include discoloured urine, bloody diarrhoea, fever, changes in mood, visual disturbances and other reactions which have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
Patients should note that taking this medicine does not prevent the transmission of hepatitis C to others. You are advised to discuss with your doctor how to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

You will most likely be told by your doctor not to drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as alcohol can worsen liver disease.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
