Uses
Curam Duo (Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid) is a combination antibiotic treatment which works by killing bacteria. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that fights and attacks the micro organisms by directly targeting their ability to form the cell walls they require to survive. By damaging the bonds which help hold the cell wall in place, it causes damage to the cell walls, and resulting from this the bacteria are killed.
However, there are some types of bacteria which have developed a resistance to penicillin antibiotics. These micro-organisms produce defensive enzymes called beta lactamases, and these enzymes offer resistance to penicillins due to them breaking the structure of the antibiotics. To overcome this, clavulanic acid, (a type of beta lactamase inhibitor) is added to the medicine.
It works by inactivating certain beta lactamase enzymes which are often present in resistant bacteria, including the plasmid-mediated type of enzyme often responsible for antibiotic resistance. This means that the overall spectrum of antibacterial activity is greatly enhanced. Infections treated include respiratory tract infections (upper and lower), otitis media and other ear infections, cellulitis and other skin or soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections (cystitis), joint infections and others not listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Curam Duo (Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid) is provided as tablets, each of which contains 500mg of amoxicillin. The content of clavulanic acid for every tablet is 125mg. Your dosage schedule will be carefully calculated by the doctor in charge of treatment. Usually, adults will be instructed to take 1 tablet every 12 hours, however this may vary from patient to patient depending on how severe the symptoms are. Infections of a severe nature may require treatment with a different strength medicine. Your doctor may direct you to take the tablets just before eating or else with the first bite of food, as administering it on an empty stomach could result in stomach upset.
