Preventing vomiting in chemotherapy patients | Ondansetron | Emeset |
Uses
Emeset (Ondansetron) works by inhibiting the actions of certain chemicals (such as serotonin) in the body which are responsible for triggering vomiting and nausea. Doctors prescribe this drug for use in patients undergoing cancer treatment (such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy) to prevent vomiting. It is also used to prevent post surgery vomiting. This drug belongs to a class of medications known as 5-HT3 blockers.
Dosage and Administration
Emeset (Ondansetron) tablets must be swallowed whole. Patients undergoing chemotherapy will most likely be told to take it 30 minutes prior to starting chemotherapy. However, if you are taking it to prevent vomiting caused by radiation therapy, you may be told to take it 1 to 2 hours before commencing therapy, or else 1 hour prior to surgery. Your doctor may prescribe extra doses, such as 1 to 3 doses per day while you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and also for 1 to 2 days after you finish treatment. Always follow the instructions provided to you by your doctor and never exceed the prescribed dose.
