Uses
Emla 5% Cream (Lidocaine / Prilocaine Hydrochloride) is a local anaesthetic cream which is applied to the skin or outer area of the genitals, to help prevent pain caused by medical procedures, such as the insertion of a syringe, skin grafts or the removal of genital warts. This numbing cream contains 2 active ingredients, both of which are amide-type local anaesthetics. Together, they work by preventing pain signals being passed on to the brain, which results in the application site becoming numb.
Dosage and Administration
Emla 5% Cream (Lidocaine / Prilocaine Hydrochloride) is usually applied prior to skin surgery or any other painful procedures. Your doctor will instruct you how to apply the cream, and tell you how much to apply. Adults being treated for skin lesions or who are being given an injection are sometimes told to apply a thick layer of the cream to the area where the injection is due to be given. It may then be covered with an air tight dressing for 1 hour, after which the procedure may be carried out.
More complicated procedures, such as skin grafts, will require the cream to be applied to a large area of skin. Patients who are undergoing treatment for a leg ulcer may be told to apply a sufficiently thick layer of cream over the ulcers, after which it should be covered with an air tight dressing that may be left on for 30 to 60 minutes. Doctors usually begin cleansing the leg ulcer within 10 minutes after the removal of the cream. The application procedure will vary for other conditions.
Side effects
Emla 5% Cream (Lidocaine / Prilocaine Hydrochloride) might cause redness, discolouration of the skin or a mild stinging sensation at the application site. If this is serious, tell your doctor. In some cases, severe reactions which require urgent medical treatment may occur, such as severe burning or stinging, bruising of the skin, dizziness and other reactions which have not been listed here.
Precautions
This cream is for external use only, and it should never be ingested. In addition to this, it should never be applied to broken skin, the eyes or nose, the mucous membranes or any other sensitive areas of the body.
Patients with a history of G6PD deficiency, methaemoglobinaemia, liver disease, kidney disease or an enzyme deficiency must tell their doctor about their condition before the cream is applied.
