Uses
Famvir (Famciclovir) is an antiviral drug used as a treatment for herpes simplex infections, including cold sores and genital herpes (some patients may take it to prevent further outbreaks of genital herpes). It may also be used as a treatment for herpes zoster (also called shingles). When taken by mouth, this drug inhibits the ability of the virus to multiply, which in turn allows the sores to heal, while also relieving pain and itching.

Dosage and Administration
Famvir (Famciclovir) comes in the form of tablets. Each tablet contains 250mg of the active ingredient. Mucocutaneous or immunocompetent patients treating genital herpes are often instructed by their doctor to take 250mg by mouth, 3 times per day, with treating lasting for 7 to 10 days. Recurrent symptoms may require a different dosage regimen.

Patients who have been prescribed this medicine to prevent herpes outbreaks may be directed to take 250mg by mouth, twice per day (patients infected with HIV may need to take 500mg, twice per day). When taken for this purpose, treatment may be required for up to 1 year. The dosage for herpes zoster and cold sores may differ, and all patients taking this medicine should only take the amount prescribed by their doctor.

Side effects
Patients treated with Famvir (Famciclovir) may sometimes experience side effects, such as:

• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Menstrual period pain
• Pain in the stomach
• Digestive disturbances

Inform your doctor of any side effects which you notice during treatment. Serious side effects may occur in a small number of patients. See your doctor immediately if you notice weight gain, a burning sensation in the feet or hands, changes in urination or any other side effects which have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
If your medical history involves kidney problems, you must tell your doctor before taking this medication.

Patients should note that this medicine does not prevent the transmission of genital herpes to other partners. Therefore, you should avoid all sexual contact during an outbreak of herpes. It is also possible to transmit genital herpes if there are no symptoms present. Because of this, a barrier method of contraception should be used at all times during sexual intercourse.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Famvir (Famciclovir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
