Virovir

Uses
Virovir (Famciclovir) is prescribed for treating sores and other symptoms caused by shingles (herpes zoster). It can also effectively control and treat genital herpes outbreaks, herpes simplex and cold sores. This drug is an antiviral medicine which prevents the herpes virus from spreading and infecting cells in the body. It achieves this by inhibiting a certain enzyme (known as DNA polymerase) which is necessary for the virus to multiply.

Dosage and Administration
The required dosage for patients taking Virovir (Famciclovir) depends on what it is being used to treat. A medical consultation is required, so that your doctor can determine the correct dosage, and patients must follow the instructions given by the prescribing doctor. Genital herpes may require 250mg taken 3 times per day for a period of 7 to 10 days. However, recurrent episodes can sometimes require 1000mg taken twice per day for 1 day. If herpes simplex is being treated, the patient may be told to take 500mg twice per day for 7 days, whereas herpes zoster can require 500mg every 8 hours for a period of 7 days.

Side effects
Treating herpes virus symptoms or other conditions with Virovir (Famciclovir) may occasionally cause patients to experience side effects, such as:

• Numbness
• Itchy skin
• Drowsiness
• Vomiting
• Pain in the stomach
• Menstrual period pain

Severe side effects may occur, and will require immediate medical care. Patients who notice changes in urination patterns, weight gain or pain in the feet need to see their doctor straight away. Other reactions which have not been mentioned in this paragraph may also be noticed by the patient.

Precautions
Patients with HIV, galactose intolerance, glucose galactose malabsorption, liver disease or any illnesses affecting the kidneys must disclose this information to their doctor before starting treatment with this medication.

Even though this drug can control herpes symptoms, it will not cure the virus, nor will it prevent it from spreading to other people. Sexual contact should be avoided during a herpes virus outbreak, and after the outbreak the patient should always use a condom during sexual intercourse, even if no symptoms are present.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Virovir (Famciclovir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
