Uses
Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) is a medicine which treats diarrhoea (it is often prescribed to treat traveller's diarrhoea). Another use for this drug is reducing the amount of stools in patients who have an ileostomy (a medical procedure involving re-routing the bowel). Doctors also prescribe it to patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease. This drug works by slowing down digestion, which gives the body time to absorb more nutrients and fluid from the food eaten, and also relieves diarrhoea.
Dosage and Administration
Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) capsules are taken orally. Follow your doctor's instructions, and never take more than the prescribed amount. Adult patients are usually told to take it straight away after each instance of diarrhoea. Treatment of chronic diarrhoea may require a dosage schedule, which can involve taking it once per day or more. Patients are advised to tell their doctor if no improvement in symptoms is noticed after 2 days of treatment (or 10 days if chronic diarrhoea is being treated). It is recommended that you drink sufficient water or other drinks, so as to replace the fluids lost as a result of diarrhoea.
