Lanoxin

Uses
Lanoxin (Digoxin) is referred to as a cardiac glycoside and is produced from the leaves of a plant called digitalis lanata (more commonly known as the foxglove). Its mode of action involves working on the heart, to improve the stability at which it beats. Conditions for which this medicine is indicated for include those related to irregular heartbeats, such as supraventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation.

It has also been used for heart failure. This medicine inhibits an enzyme known as Na-K ATPase, sometimes referred to as the sodium pump. As a result of this, myocardial systolic contraction is increased and the heart rate is slowed down. This allows for blood to be pumped through the body in a way which is more efficient, allowing for symptoms of conditions such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat which affects how the blood is pumped by the heart) to be treated.

Dosage and Administration
Lanoxin (Digoxin) comes as tablets, which contain 250mcg of the active ingredient. Determining the correct dosage is a delicate and complicated process, due to the fact that the amount of medicine required in the blood to produce a response is very near to that which will cause undesirable reactions. Close medical supervision will be required as well as blood tests to monitor the amount of medicine in the blood. These tablets are taken with a glass of water. Remember that you must follow all dosage instructions that your doctor gives to you. Do not exceed the dosage recommended to you.

Side effects
If you are undergoing treatment with Lanoxin (Digoxin) tablets, it is possible that some side effects may occur, such as:

• Weakness
• Diarrhoea
• Dizziness
• Appetite reduction
• Changes in breast size affecting male patients

Tell your doctor about all side effects which occur. If you notice any serious reactions, go to see your doctor straight away. Examples of this include hallucinations, strange behaviour, bloody stools and other reactions that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
Sudden cessation of treatment could result in your condition becoming worse. Your doctor will advise you on how to avoid this when treatment is being stopped.

If you are undergoing treatment with this medicine, it is possible that you may not be able to drive or operate machinery safely. Avoid driving unless you are sure that it is safe to do so.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Lanoxin (Digoxin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
