Uses
Lioresal (Baclofen) is an antispastic medicine indicated for the treatment of muscle spasms and spasticity when these symptoms occur as a result of multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, motor neurone disease or other conditions. It works by causing the muscles to relax. Medical experts believe that this medicine may derive its muscle relaxant properties due to acting on the GABA-B receptors present in the spinal cord.
This results in a decreased amount of reflexes and contractions occurring in the muscles, and can also relieve tension. It can also treat flexor spasms and pain. However, it is not used to treat muscle spasms caused by rheumatic conditions. Studies have been conducted to test its effects if used in the treatment of withdrawal symptoms in patients affected by alcoholism and persistent hiccups.
Dosage and Administration
Lioresal (Baclofen) comes in the form of 10mg tablets for oral administration. The dosage will be dependent on the condition being treated and the opinion of the doctor in charge of treatment. Adults undergoing treatment for muscle spasms are sometimes directed by their doctor to take 5mg 3 times per day for a period of 3 days, and then 10mg 3 times per day for a further 3 days, followed by 15mg 3 times daily before a subsequent adjustment to 20mg administered 3 times per day.
Doctors sometimes make further changes to the dosage for maintenance treatment, and the usually maintenance dosage ranges from 40mg to 80mg per day (however, dosage regimens consisting 80mg per day are usually given as 4 separate doses). In all cases, adjusting the dosage will be the responsibility of the doctor. You must not change the dosage unless following the instructions of your doctor. The dosage for trigeminal neuralgia or other conditions may differ.
Side effects
Possible reactions resulting from treatment with Lioresal (Baclofen) include:
Report any reactions you experience to the doctor in charge of treatment. Go to the hospital or consult your doctor immediately if you are affected by hallucinations, seizures, depression or any other serious side effects that are not mentioned here.
Precautions
When treatment is being discontinued, the doctor may direct you to administer a lower and lower dosage over a gradual period of time. Withdrawal symptoms are possible in patients who have been taking it for a prolonged period of time.
Monitoring of the liver function may be needed in some patients during treatment.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Lioresal (Baclofen) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
