Uses
Losec (Omeprazole) inhibits acidity in the stomach, so as to help treat duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, GERD, erosive oesophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions. If used for ulcers that are associated with H. pylori, doctors will also recommend the use of an antibiotic. This drug is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor), and a prodrug. Upon ingestion, it is converted to sulfenic acid (its active metabolite) and binds with the proton pump in the parietal cell, resulting in the long acting prevention of gastric acid secretion (usually for 24 to 48 hours).
Dosage and Administration
Losec (Omeprazole) is used on a sort term basis (ranging from 4 to 8 weeks) when used for gastric ulcers. When used to maintain healing of erosive oesophagitis, the treatment period may be longer. It is possible that pathological hypersecretory conditions such as systemic mastocytosis, multiple endocrine adenomas and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome will require treatment on a long term basis. This medicine comes supplied as 40mg strength capsules for oral administration. Your doctor will tell you the precise daily dosage, as well as the length of time that you will need to take it for.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
