Neo-Mercazole

Uses
Neo-Mercazole (Carbimazole) is an anti-thyroid agent which is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) and primary or secondary thyrotoxicosis. Other clinical applications include helping to normalise the function of the thyroid gland prior to a thyroidectomy (surgery in which the thyroid gland is either partially or totally removed) and being given to patients undergoing radioactive iodine treatment.

After it is absorbed by the body, this medicine is converted to methimazole (its active form). It works by stopping the thyroid gland from using iodine to produce thyroid hormones, which in turn causes a decrease in T3 and T4 (thyroxine or thyroid hormones) levels. Gradually, this may help to restore the normal functioning of the thyroid gland.

Dosage and Administration
Treatment with Neo-Mercazole (Carbimazole) requires that the patient closely follows their doctor's instructions. Laboratory tests are usually needed in order to diagnose the condition. This medicine comes in the form of 5mg tablets. Adults treating hyperthyroidism are sometimes told by their doctor to take it in 2 to 3 divided doses, either in the morning and evening or else in the morning, early afternoon and nighttime.

The dosage that doctors prescribe for patients at the start of treatment can range from 4 to 12 of the 5mg tablets per day. After the symptoms have been controlled, the doctor may decide to reduce the dosage, and the patient may be told to take 1 to 3 tablets each day.

Side effects
Treating thyroid problems with Neo-Mercazole (Carbimazole) may result in the patient experiencing some side effects, including:

• Hair loss
• Feeling sick
• Itchy sensation
• Soreness of the joints
• Taste sensation changes

It is important to notify your doctor if any side effects become bothersome. Serious side effects are also possible, and will require medical treatment immediately.

Precautions
This medicine might cause depression of the bone marrow, which may trigger a reduced amount of blood cells and could also decrease the body's ability to fight off infections. This condition could become life threatening if treatment is not obtained as soon as possible. Medical tests may be required if any symptoms of this are noticed.

Liver problems may occur in certain patients as a result of taking this medicine. If you notice symptoms of this, see your doctor immediately.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Neo-Mercazole (Carbimazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
