Uses
Thyronorm (Thyroxine Sodium) works by compensating for the insufficient production of hormones by the thyroid, which in turn helps to treat the problems related to metabolism, muscle strength, temperature and any other symptoms of hypothyroidism. This could be due to radiation therapy for cancer, thyroiditis (either as a result of an autoimmune disorder or virus), a low iodine diet, surgery, medical treatment or other causes.

Two hormones are produced by the thyroid, a gland which occurs in the neck. These include T3 (also called triodothyronine) and T4 (commonly referred to as thyroxine). The body produces triodothyronine, (said to be the more active hormone) from thyroxine. Hypothyroidism is defined as being unable to produce a sufficient amount of thyroid hormone.

This could lead to symptoms such as weight gain (due to a decrease in metabolism), as well as fatigue and sensitivity to cold temperatures. Without treatment, patients could even experience heart problems and obesity. Patients affected by this condition are often treated with a synthetic version of T4 (such as this medicine), so as to normalise thyroid hormone levels.

Dosage and Administration
Thyronorm (Thyroxine Sodium) tablets contain 150mcg of the active ingredient. Laboratory blood tests are often needed to determine the T4 blood levels. This can help your doctor determine the right dosage so as to return your thyroid hormone levels to normal. You may be instructed to cease taking certain medicines that can affect the results of the tests. Adults are usually told by their doctor to administer the medicine without food, before the consumption of breakfast. The required dosage will differ for each individual, however in all cases deciding the correct dosage is the responsibility of the doctor providing treatment. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Side effects
Use of Thyronorm (Thyroxine Sodium) could result in:

• Weak muscles
• Mood changes
• Changes in body weight
• Cramps affecting the stomach
• Hair loss which is not severe in nature

During treatment, you will be required to inform your doctor of any side effects which occur. Serious reactions can pose a threat to your health and will require treatment immediately. Examples of this can include fever, perspiration, blood pressure changes, dilation of the veins visible on the neck, tremors and other reactions that have not been listed here.

Precautions
These tablets must never be taken for weight loss by patients with normal thyroid function. This is extremely dangerous and could even increase the risk of fatal reactions.

Regular medical tests may be needed during treatment with this drug.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Thyronorm (Thyroxine Sodium) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
