Uses
Osteofos (Sodium Alendronate) works by increasing the thickness of bones and slowing down the loss and breakdown of bones in patients suffering from osteoporosis, Paget's disease and other bone conditions. Post menopausal women, as well as patients taking corticosteroid medication may be prescribed this drug to prevent them from developing osteoporosis. The main ingredient in this drug is a type of bisphosphonate.
Dosage and Administration
The proper dosage for patients taking Osteofos (Sodium Alendronate) tablets can vary greatly, and is decided upon by the prescribing doctor, depending on the condition being treated. The dosage for treating Paget's disease can sometimes be different to the dosage for osteoporosis. Patients may need to continue taking this drug for an extended period of time. Because of this, you are advised to keep taking it exactly as prescribed, and not to stop treatment unless your doctor tells you to.

It is recommended that you inform your doctor about any side effects which may occur. Although it is uncommon, some patients taking this drug may experience serious side effects. You must consult your doctor straight away if you notice bloody vomit, itchiness, pain in the chest, a numb jaw, loose teeth or any other reactions which have not been mentioned here.
Precautions
Doctors will generally not prescribe this drug to children, as it can cause severe vomiting, fever and flu symptoms.
If you are unable to sit in an upright position for at least half an hour and have a low level of calcium in the blood or oesophagus problems, you must inform the prescribing doctor, as this medication is problably not suitable for you.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Osteofos (Sodium Alendronate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
