Uses
Otrivine (Xylometazoline Hydrochloride) works by relieving nasal congestion. It is used to treat a stuffy nose due to allergic rhinitis (hay fever), colds, flu, sinusitis, upper respiratory allergies and other causes. The active ingredient in this nasal spray is a type of decongestant which acts directly on the alpha adrenergic receptors of the nasal mucosa. It causes vasoconstriction (tightening of the blood vessels) in the sinus and the lining of the nose, which results in a reduction of blood flow to the sinuses and nasal lining. This helps to decrease the occurrence of swelling in the nose, thereby providing relief from congestion. Another benefit of this medicine is that it can decrease mucus production, which helps to provide additional relief from a blocked nose.
Dosage and Administration
Otrivine (Xylometazoline Hydrochloride) is provided in a bottle, and it is administered into the nose by spraying. Each spray will deliver a measured dose, ensuring accurate dosing every time. Your doctor will tell you how and when to use it, and you will need to follow all dosage instructions given to you. Adult patients are sometimes directed to administer 1 spray into each nostril when using it. It can be used roughly every 8 to 10 hours, however you must not use it excessively, as doing so may cause increased nasal congestion or damaged tissue inside the nose. Doctors generally tell patients not to use it for more than 3 to 5 days.
