Uses
Prograf (Tacrolimus) is used to prevent the immune system for fighting and ultimately rejecting an organ (such as a liver, kidney or heart) that has been transplanted. This can occur because the immune system may treat the new organ as an invader. Taking this medication reduces the action of the immune system. It achieves this by preventing certain substances called lymphokines from being produced. As these substances help to stimulate the production of the white blood cells involved in an immune response, blocking their production decreases the activity of the immune system and helps the body to accept the new organ.

Dosage and Administration
Prograf (Tacrolimus) comes as 5mg capsules. While you are taking this medication, you will be closely monitored. Strictly adhere to all instructions given to you by your doctor. Adults are usually told to take it every 12 hours. It is necessary to continue taking this drug for it to be effective. Do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor tells you to do so. While you are taking this medication, regular blood and urine tests will be ordered by your doctor, to ensure that this medication is not causing serious side effects.

Side effects
If you are taking Prograf (Tacrolimus) capsules, it is possible that some side effects will occur, such as:

• Tremors
• Dizziness
• Sleep problems
• A reduced appetite
• Back pain or sore joints

If you experience any side effects, you should tell your doctor. Although it is rare, severe side effects may occur. You must immediately consult your doctor if you notice seizures, pain when urinating, bloody urine, hyperglycaemia, an increase in weight or any other signs that you are suffering from a severe reaction.

Precautions
Taking this medication can sometimes increase the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, you should avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. You should also not have any vaccinations while taking this medicine unless your doctor has told you that it is safe to do so.

If you are currently taking cyclosporine, your doctor may tell you not to start taking this drug until at least 24 hours after your last dose of cyclosporine. Also, after you finish taking this drug, your doctor will most likely tell you not to take cyclosporine until at least 24 hours have passed since your last dose of this drug.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Prograf (Tacrolimus) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
