Proluton Depot

Uses
Proluton Depot (Hydroxyprogesterone) is a type of progestin that has been synthesized. It is used to decrease the risk of a preterm birth (a baby which is born after fewer than 37 weeks after becoming pregnant) in women who are considered likely to give birth too early, such as those with a previous history of at least one preterm birth. However, it is not indicated for the treatment of women who are pregnant with more than one child.

Clinical trials have been conducted in which women said to be at risk of preterm birth participated, in order to test its efficacy. The active ingredient in this medicine is said to be similar in nature to the female hormone progesterone, however it is synthetic. Medical experts are not entirely sure of its exact mode of action in the prevention of a preterm birth.

Dosage and Administration
Proluton Depot (Hydroxyprogesterone) is provided as 1ml ampoules for injection. Each 1ml contains 250mg of the active ingredient. The injection will be given intramuscularly (straight into the muscle) to the patient by a doctor, and it will need to be administered in a clinic or doctor`s office. You must not self inject.

The dosing schedule will be decided by your doctor. In some cases, women being treated with it have been given the injection once per week (at 7 day intervals). Doctors sometimes begin treatment after 16 weeks to 20 weeks and 6 days after the patient becomes pregnant with treatment being continued until week 37 (or the delivery of the child). Always follow the instructions provided by your doctor.

Side effects
Use of Proluton Depot (Hydroxyprogesterone) injection could lead to side effects, such as:

• Itchiness
• Loose stools
• Feeling sick
• A bump where the injection was given
• Soreness or bruises at the injection spot

If you notice any side effects after the administration of the injection, ensure that you tell the doctor treating you. Serious reactions are also possible. You must seek medical treatment immediately if you experience inflammation of the leg, redness son the leg, pain or any other severe side effects that have not been listed here.

Precautions
This medicine is not used to stop active preterm labour.

Patients with thromboembolic disorders, cancer, vaginal bleeding that has not been diagnosed, jaundice, liver conditions, hypertension that is not under control or certain other conditions may not be treated with this medication.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Proluton Depot (Hydroxyprogesterone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
