Uses
Quetapel (Quetiapine Fumarate) is indicated for the treatment of chronic psychoses such as schizophrenia, as well as many of the symptoms associated with bipolar disorder. The active ingredient in these tablets is known as an atypical antipsychotic, and its mechanism of action is interacting with various neurotransmitter receptors in the brain, including the serotonin and dopamine (D1 and D2) receptors. As a result of this, abnormal dopamine activity in the central nervous system believed to be responsible for psychotic illnesses is reduced.
This helps relieve both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Symptoms of bipolar disorder which are treated with this medicine include manic episodes, depressive episodes, and for maintenance treatment, so as to prevent symptoms from occurring. When used for maintenance of bipolar, the doctor will usually give it to the patient alongside a mood stabilizer. In some cases, patients have been treated with this medicine for depression (major depressive disorder).
Dosage and Administration
Quetapel (Quetiapine Fumarate) tablets are taken by mouth. The dosage will be calculated by the doctor and individualized for each patient. In some cases, patients may be told by their doctor to administer it twice per day. Doctors sometimes direct adults treating psychoses to take 50mg on the first day of treatment, 100mg on the second day, 200mg on the third day and 300mg on the fourth day. After the fourth day, the doctor will assess the patient's response to treatment and decide whether to reduce or increase the dosage. Ensure that you fully comply with all dosing instructions provided by your doctor.
