Uses
Reglan (Metoclopramide) is a medication which increases the speed at which the stomach empties into the intestines. It does this by increasing muscular contractions in the digestive tract. This drug is used to treat diabetic gastroparesis symptoms (slow gastric emptying in diabetic patients) such as appetite loss, nausea and a feeling of fullness lasting a long time after the patient has eaten. It is also used on a short term basis for treating heartburn, and may reduce damage to the oesophagus, while also helping with the healing process.
Dosage and Administration
Patients treating gastroparesis with Reglan (Metoclopramide) tablets may be told by their doctor to take this medicine 4 times per day, with each dose taken on an empty stomach 30 minutes prior to eating and before going to bed. It can take 2 to 8 weeks for the full benefits to be noticed. However, treatment should not exceed 12 weeks due to the risk of a condition known as tardive dyskinesia (a disorder which causes involuntary bodily movements). Patients treating other conditions may be prescribed a lower dose. All instructions given by the prescribing doctor must be followed.
Side effects
Side effects have been reported by patients taking Reglan (Metoclopramide) tablets, and some examples are listed here:
If any of the side effects listed above are noticed, patients are advised to tell a doctor. Severe adverse reactions which require immediate treatment or medical care can occur, although this is considered to be less common. If you notice muscle stiffness, suicidal thoughts, thinking about harming or injuring yourself, depression, muscle stiffness or any other signs of a serious reaction, you should see your doctor straight away.
Precautions
Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia include uncontrolled body movements. See your doctor straight away if you notice any signs that you may be suffering from this condition.
This medicine can make it more difficult for diabetic patients to exercise control over blood sugar levels. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medicine before you can take this drug.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Reglan (Metoclopramide) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
