Samserin

Uses
Samserin (Cycloserine) is an antibiotic used for tuberculosis. It exhibits a broad spectrum of activity and works by weakening and destroying the bacteria responsible for causing tuberculosis (known as mycobacterium tuberculosis). This is achieved by working against 2 enzymes (alanine racemase and d-alanine-d-alanine ligase) which are needed for the synthesis of cell walls. This blocks the bacteria from synthesizing cell walls, which they need to survive. As a result of this, the bacteria are destroyed. Generally, doctors advise the use of this medication in cases of bacterial resistance to other antibiotics. It is possible that it will be given in combination with other medications, so as to target the bacteria in different ways.

Dosage and Administration
Samserin (Cycloserine) comes in the form of 250mg strength film coated tablets for oral administration. Adults affected by active or extrapulmonary tuberculosis may be instructed to administer a daily dosage ranging from 500mg to 1g per day, as 1 or 2 doses. The length of time for which the medicine is to be taken can vary, usually until the maximum improvement in symptoms has been noticed. Normally, this means taking it for 18 to 24 months. However, in all cases, it will be necessary to comply with all instructions given by the doctor in charge of treatment.

Side effects
Patients who are taking the antibiotic Samserin (Cycloserine) should note that it may cause side effects, including:

• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Sleepy feeling
• Disorientation

Report all side effects to your doctor. Be sure to get medical treatment straight away if you experience unusual behaviour, tremors, seizures or any other severe side effects which are not listed here.

Precautions
During treatment with this antibiotic, it will be necessary to avoid the consumption of alcohol. This is because drinking alcohol during treatment can increase the risk of seizures and other side effects.

If you experience sleepiness after taking this medicine, you must not drive or use machinery.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Samserin (Cycloserine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
