Uses
Serenace (Haloperidol) is a type of antipsychotic drug widely used in the treatment of schizophrenia, mania, severe behavioural problems (such as aggression or hyperactivity) and other related conditions. It is also indicated for the treatment of Tourette's syndrome, as it may help to treat some of the symptoms of this condition such as twitches or the urge to say inappropriate words.
This medicine works by blocking certain receptors present in the brain, including the dopamine receptor, which helps to prevent and reduce abnormal dopamine activity, considered to be a key factor in conditions such as schizophrenia. Other conditions for which patients have used this drug include persistent hiccups, delirium, chronic pain, psychosis and confusion.
Dosage and Administration
Serenace (Haloperidol) comes as tablets, and each tablet contains 1.5mg of the active ingredient. Adults who are being treated for mania are often told to start out with an initial dose ranging from 0.5mg to 5mg (the exact amount will be decided by the doctor providing treatment), 2 to 3 times per day. Maintenance treatment may require an adjustment to the dosage. Other conditions may be treated with a different dosage regimen and in all cases, patients must follow the instructions given by their doctor.
