Uses
Strattera (Atomoxetine) is used to treat patients who have been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), a psychiatric disorder in which the patient displays symptoms of hyperactivity or inattentiveness, which can have a negative effect on academic and social functioning. This drug is used with psychological or educational therapy, and is considered to be one part of a comprehensive treatment program. It is a type of selective noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitor, and when administered, it may help to regulate activity levels and improve behavioural issues and other problems associated with ADHD.
Dosage and Administration
Strattera (Atomoxetine) comes as capsules, containing 40mg of the active ingredient. Patients weighing up to 70kg are sometimes told by a doctor to take 0.5mg per kilogram of weight per day, and after 3 days, the doctor may increase the dosage to 1.2mg per kilogram per day, as a single dose taken in the morning or else as separate doses in the morning and evening.
However, patients that weigh over 70kg are usually started at 40mg per day, which the doctor may increase to 80mg per day (taken as a single dose in the morning or else as 2 separate doses) after at least 3 days of treatment. In some cases, when no signs of a satisfactory response are noticed after 2 to 4 weeks, the doctor may increase the dosage to 100mg per day.
