Strattera

Uses
Strattera (Atomoxetine) acts on certain chemicals in the brain which are responsible for hyperactive behaviour and the ability to control impulses. It is used in combination with counselling and therapy to treat patients affected by ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Treatment may help contribute to a reduction in hyperactive and impulsive behaviour, while also helping the patient to focus, pay attention and behave better. It is a type of drug known as a selective noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitor.

Dosage and Administration
Patients taking Strattera (Atomoxetine) will be provided with dosage instructions by their doctor, and it is essential that these instructions are followed. Adult patients being treated for ADHD are sometimes given a dosage regimen that consists of 40mg taken once per day (in the morning). However, it is also possible that the patient will be told to take 20mg twice per day (in the morning and evening) instead of the single dose. After at least 3 days of treatment, the doctor may instruct the patient to take 80mg per day (as a single dose or else divided doses), and 2 to 4 weeks later, the dosage may be increased again, to 100mg per day if the doctor decides that it is necessary.

Side effects
Strattera (Atomoxetine) may cause:

• Impotence
• Itchy skin
• Irritability
• Stomach upset
• A reduction in appetite

It is important to inform your doctor if any side effects occur. Serious side effects are less common, but will require immediate medical treatment. Examples include problems related to urination, aggressive behaviour, hallucinations and other reactions which are not listed here.

Precautions
Patients who have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks, or who are currently taking an MAO inhibitor will be told by their doctor not to take this medicine. After stopping treatment with this drug, the patient will also be told to wait at least 2 weeks before it is safe to take an MAO inhibitor.

Suicidal thoughts or other mental symptoms may occur in patients taking this drug.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Strattera (Atomoxetine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
