Treating patients for gallstones | Ursodiol | Ursodil |
Uses
Ursodil (Ursodiol) is a type of bile acid, similar to those produced by the body. It is given to patients to dissolve or treat gallstones, especially in patients unable or unwilling to undergo surgery. In addition to this, patients who are overweight and undergoing rapid loss of weight may be prescribed this drug to prevent gallstones. This medication works by reducing the body's cholesterol production, while also dissolving cholesterol which has formed stones in the patient's gallbladder. Another use for this drug is treating primary biliary cirrhosis.
Dosage and Administration
Ursodil (Ursodiol) comes as tablets, which you must swallow whole with a glass of water. It is very important to note that different patients may be prescribed different doses, based on their condition as well as other factors. Your doctor will tell you the correct amount to take. In some cases, patients have been told to take it 2 to 3 times per day when treating gallstones. Patients losing weight rapidly may be directed to take it twice per day in order to prevent gallstones. It is worth noting that it may be necessary to continue treatment with this drug for an extended period of time, sometimes as long as 2 years. There is also a possibility that gallstones may re-occur within 5 years of treatment with this medication.
