Uses
Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is used to lessen the risk of a stroke in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. It is an anticoagulant which works by preventing blood clots from being formed. Other indications include the treatment or prevention of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and pulmonary embolism. This medicine is a direct factor Xa (FXa) inhibitor, meaning that it inhibits the activity of factor X and prothrombinase, the enzymes which play a vital role in the formation of blood clots.
This helps to reduce the formation of thrombin, a protease that can cause blood clots. As a result of this, it is able to indirectly block platelet aggregation (the process in which blood platelets clump together, which can result in a blood clot) caused by thrombin. In some cases, patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery may be considered at risk of blood clots occurring in the lungs or legs. They may be directed to take this medicine so as to lower the risk of this occurring.
Dosage and Administration
Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is provided as 10mg strength tablets which may be administered without regard to meals. Your doctor will carefully determine the dosage regimen based on your individual factors. Patients being treated for prophylaxis (prevention) of DHT following hip or knee replacement surgery are generally directed to take 10mg (one tablet) per day. If the patient has undergone a knee replacement, treatment may be required to continue for 12 days, however, those who have had their hip replaced may be directed to take it for 35 days. It is very important to note that this may differ in some cases and it will be necessary to closely follow the directions of the doctor in charge of treatment.
Side effects
Patients may notice side effects during the course of treatment with Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) tablets. Possible examples may include:
