Uses
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is an antipsychotic drug used to treat psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other related conditions. It works by affecting certain natural chemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals are commonly referred to as neurotransmitters, and are important in transmitting messages between the brain cells, and are also used to regulate behaviour and mood. By preventing excessive dopamine activity in the brain, this drug helps to reduce and prevent hallucinations, hostility, emotional problems and other schizophrenia symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) tablets are swallowed whole, and it is essential that the dosage directions provided by your doctor are strictly followed. The dosage required may vary. In most cases, patients are prescribed an initial dosage of 5mg to 10mg per day. A maintenance dosage may then be prescribed, generally 10mg per day. The maximum dose is 20mg per day, however, most patients will not be prescribed a dosage this high.
