Uses
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) is an anticoagulant medicine indicated for the prevention and treatment of blood clots, such as those occurring as a result of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). It works by preventing the formation of blood clots inside the blood vessels. The active ingredient in this medicine was formerly known as acenocoumarol. Although it will not dissolve clots after their formation, it can prevent the enlargement of the blood clot, thereby helping to protect against the potential serious problems which could occur as a result of blood clots.
This medicine acts as an antagonist of vitamin K. As this vitamin is needed for the production of the proteins needed to cause a blood clot (clotting factors), preventing vitamin K activity blocks their production. Without clotting factors, the likelihood of a blood clot is significantly reduced. Other conditions for which this medicine may be used include blood clots in patients affected by rheumatic heart disease, atrial fibrillation and pulmonary embolism.
Dosage and Administration
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) comes in the form of 4mg tablets which are taken by mouth. It is usually administered as a single daily dose, however the precise amount needed will require careful calculation by your doctor. A special blood test designed to measure the time taken for blood to clot will be taken regularly. This is referred to as the INR (international normalised ratio) and it will allow your doctor to adjust your dosage. Generally, adult patients are told to take a dosage ranging from 1mg to 8mg per day, however a 4mg dosage is normally administered on day 1 of treatment. Do not take more than your doctor directs you to take.
