Uses
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) is an anticoagulant drug which works by thinning the blood and reducing the blood concentration of prothrombin. This makes it a common choice for doctors treating patients affected by atrial fibrillation and other coronary problems. In addition to this, it is indicated for the prophylaxis of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms.
Medical experts have theorized that its primary mechanism of action involves interrupting the activity of vitamin K and competing with it for an enzyme required for the synthesis of prothrombin. This prevents vitamin K from producing clotting factors and helps lead to an increase in prothrombin time. Protecting against blood clots is very important, as in some cases, the clot could move up to the brain, leading to a stroke.
Dosage and Administration
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) comes in uncoated 2mg tablets. Your doctor will need blood tests when calculating the dosage. These tests will determine how long it takes for your blood to clot. Patients are generally told to take anything from 1mg to 8mg per day, however 4mg is sometimes taken on the first day. It may take 36 to 48 hours for the medicine to fully take effect. Because of this, alternative treatments may be ordered by your doctor in cases when rapid action is needed.
