Uses
Plavix 75 (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) is an antiplatelet medicine which works by inhibiting the formation of platelets, so as to prevent blood clots. It has a wide range of indications, including the prevention of complications in patients who have had an ischaemic stroke, lowering the possibility of atherothrombotic complications in patients who have had a heart attack, and also to help prevent problems in patients with other disorders affecting the blood vessels.
The main ingredient in these tablets is a type of prodrug which is metabolised into its active form by the CYP450 enzymes in the body. The active metabolite is then able to exhibit its therapeutic effects, which it does by selectively blocking a type of organic compound that mediates the activation of platelets (known as ADP) from binding to the P2Y12 receptors. This helps prevent ADP from causing the blood platelets to group together and form a blood clot. As a result of this, blockages and clots within the blood vessels are considerably less likely to occur.
Dosage and Administration
Plavix 75 (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) comes in tablet form. Your doctor will tell you the correct amount to take each day. Adult patients are normally given instructions by the doctor in charge of treatment which direct them to take 75mg (equal to one tablet) once per day. It may be administered with meals or without food. However, some medical conditions will require a higher starting dose (referred to as a loading dose) when beginning treatment first, which may then be reduced upon the instruction of a doctor. In all cases, strict adherence to the dosage instructions given by your doctor will be required at all times.
