Uses
Divaa (Valproate Semisodium or Divalproex Sodium) functions as an anticonvulsant and has other medical uses, such as treating manic episodes in patients affected by bipolar disorder and the prevention of migraine headaches. When used as an epilepsy medicine, this medicine acts as an anticonvulsant, and helps to prevent excessive abnormal electrical signals from being released in the brain, while also affecting certain neurotransmitters (such as GABA). As a result of this, nerve activity in the brain is stabilised, which helps to control seizures.
Acting on GABA can also help to stabilise the mood in patients affected by bipolar disorder, and helps to calm patients down during episodes of mania. Although this medicine is used to prevent patients from getting migraine headaches, it will not provide relief from a migraine headache once it has begun.
Dosage and Administration
Divaa (Valproate Semisodium or Divalproex Sodium) tablets contain 500mg of the active ingredient. Adults affected by epilepsy who are being treated for complex partial seizures are sometimes given a dosage regimen that the doctor calculates at a rate of 10mg to 15mg per kilogram of body weight, per day. The doctor providing treatment may then decide to make adjustments to the dosage, however, patients must follow all instructions given to them. The dosage for migraine prevention, other types of epilepsy and bipolar disorder may be different, and in all cases, patients must obey the instructions given by their doctor.
