Uses
Flagyl (Metronidazole) belongs to a class of medicines called nitroimidazole antibiotics, and it is effective against a wide range of bacteria and protozoa. By destroying these microorganisms, this medicine treats the infection. Doctors may prescribe this drug to treat vaginal trichomas, as well as treating infections caused by entamoeba histolytica (which can lead to amoebic dysentery). Other conditions treated include bone infections, pneumonia, pelvic cellulitis and many other different types of bacterial and protozoal infections.

Dosage and Administration
Flagyl (Metronidazole) comes as tablets, which are swallowed whole together with a full glass of water, either after eating or during a meal. The exact dosage varies, and your doctor will tell you how much to take, as well as how long treatment will last. Patients treating urogenital trichomoniasis may be told to take 200mg 3 times per day (or else 400mg twice per day) for a period of 7 days. Acute dental infections may require 3 to 7 days of treatment, with 200mg taken 3 times per day. Other conditions may require different doses, and you must consult your doctor to determine the correct dosage.

Side effects
Patients who take Flagyl (Metronidazole) should note that some side effects may occur, such as:

• Appetite loss
• Taste changes
• Darkening of urine
• Pain in the stomach
• Swelling of the tongue

While you are taking this medicine, it is recommended that you tell your doctor about any side effects which you notice. Serious side effects which require immediate medical attention include changes in mood, pain when urinating, seizures, eye pain, fever and various other reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
You will most likely be advised by your doctor to avoid alcohol during the course of treatment, and for a period of time (usually 48 hours) after you finish treatment. Drinking alcoholic beverages while taking this medication can cause cramps in the stomach, vomiting and nausea.

It is necessary to continue taking this medication until you have finished the entire amount that has been prescribed to you (unless your doctor has told you to stop taking it). This is because stopping treatment early can result in your symptoms returning.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Flagyl (Metronidazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
