Uses
Kiklin (Bixalomer) is indicated for the treatment of an electrolyte disturbance known as hyperphosphatemia when the patient is affected by chronic kidney disease and is on dialysis. Patients on dialysis often suffer from a reduction of renal function, which can cause high blood phosphorus levels due to the inability of the body to excrete phosphorus into the urine.

An excess concentration of phosphorus may cause pain in the bones and an increased risk of fractures due to renal osteodystrophy, and may also contribute to coronary artery calcification. Doctors prescribe this medicine to help control phosphorus levels. It works by preventing phosphate from being absorbed by the body, which is achieved by acting in the gastrointestinal tract and binding to the phosphate present there.

Dosage and Administration
Kiklin (Bixalomer) comes in the form of capsules, each of which contains 250mg of the main ingredient. Patients on dialysis who have been instructed by their doctor to take this medicine as a hyperphosphatemia treatment are sometimes directed to take 500mg, 3 times per day. The capsules are usually taken prior to eating. In all cases, the doctor will monitor the patient and their serum phosphorus levels, and based on this, adjustments to the dosage may be required. Doctors generally do not prescribe doses that exceed 7,500mg per day.

Side effects
Treatment of hyperphosphatemia with Kiklin (Bixalomer) capsules may cause:

  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Severe constipation
  • Faeces which is hard
  • Discomfort affecting the abdomen

You are advised to inform your doctor if any side effects occur during treatment. Although less common, serious side effects are also possible. Seek medical care immediately if you notice epigastric pain, melenia, pyrexia or any other serious reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
Patients may be instructed to monitor their bowel movements, so as to watch for signs of constipation.

During treatment with this medicine, patients will be given special dietary instructions, which will include restricting their intake of phosphorus.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Kiklin (Bixalomer) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
