Uses
Largactil (Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride) belongs to a group of medicines known as phenothiazine antipsychotics, and it is widely used to treat psychotic conditions, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety. It has also been used for migraine, to treat hiccups which persist and to prevent vomiting caused by surgery. It is a widely held belief that schizophrenia is related to dopamine overactivity in the brain. By blocking dopamine receptors, this medicine helps to control schizophrenia.
When used to stop vomiting, this medicine can affect the vomiting centre (the part of the brain responsible for controlling vomiting), which in turn can prevent nausea and vomiting. Other conditions for which this drug have been used for include insomnia, tetanus and severe pruritus (itching).
