Uses
Seroquel (Quetiapine Fumarate) is an atypical antipsychotic that affects serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which makes it a useful medicine for treating schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Patients with bipolar disorder may be given this medicine to treat manic episodes, episodes of depression or to stabilise their mood.
Schizophrenia symptoms, including hallucinations, hostile behaviour and a lack of interest in life are also able to be treated with this medicine. By stopping excess dopamine activity (believed to be one of the main factors in triggering schizophrenia symptoms), this medicine can help to control the behavioural symptoms of schizophrenia.
Dosage and Administration
Patients undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression with Seroquel (Quetiapine Fumarate) should never take more than the amount prescribed by their doctor. Adults who are being treated for mania with bipolar disorder may be directed by their doctor to start treatment with a dose of 50mg, taken twice per day.
The doctor will usually adjust the dosage, and it is possible that the patient will be instructed to take an amount ranging from 400mg to 800mg per day. Other conditions, such as bipolar depression, schizophrenia and major depressive disorder may require a different dosage regimen.
