Cholesterol reduction Atorvastatin Calcium Lipvas

Uses
Lipvas (Atorvastatin Calcium) works in combination with a low fat diet and reduced intake of sugar to lower cholesterol. This medicine is a member of the statin family of drugs and its cholesterol reducing effects are achieved via blocking the enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol. In a normal healthy body, the production of cholesterol by the liver is needed in order to help with cell and hormone production.

It also has other functions. However, if excess amounts of it find their way into the blood stream (such as from the consumption of trans fats or saturated fats) they can clog the arteries, putting the patient at risk of heart attacks, strokes, myocardial infarctions or other serious problems. When taken by mouth, this medicine is quickly absorbed and it goes to work at the liver, where it selectively inhibits the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme and blocks its action.

This reduces the synthesis of cholesterol and other lipoproteins, and if combined with the recommended dietary changes, it can lead to a substantial reduction in total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides, reducing the risk of a stroke or heart attack, especially in those at risk due to age, hypertension, a family history of cardiovascular conditions or other factors.

Dosage and Administration
Lipvas (Atorvastatin Calcium) comes in film coated tablets which contain 10mg of the active ingredient. Your doctor will evaluate your cholesterol levels and advise you on the required dietary adjustments. Adults taking this medicine to prevent cardiovascular disease may be told by their doctor to take anything from 10mg to 80mg per day, and adjustments may be made at the discretion of the doctor, usually at 2 to 4 week intervals. Treatment of hyperlipidaemia or other disorders might require variations in the dosage regime, and in all cases thorough evaluation of your condition and assessment of individual needs will be considered by doctors determining the correct dosage.
