Uses
Lipvas (Atorvastatin Calcium) works in combination with a low fat diet and reduced intake of sugar to lower cholesterol. This medicine is a member of the statin family of drugs and its cholesterol reducing effects are achieved via blocking the enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol. In a normal healthy body, the production of cholesterol by the liver is needed in order to help with cell and hormone production.
It also has other functions. However, if excess amounts of it find their way into the blood stream (such as from the consumption of trans fats or saturated fats) they can clog the arteries, putting the patient at risk of heart attacks, strokes, myocardial infarctions or other serious problems. When taken by mouth, this medicine is quickly absorbed and it goes to work at the liver, where it selectively inhibits the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme and blocks its action.
This reduces the synthesis of cholesterol and other lipoproteins, and if combined with the recommended dietary changes, it can lead to a substantial reduction in total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides, reducing the risk of a stroke or heart attack, especially in those at risk due to age, hypertension, a family history of cardiovascular conditions or other factors.
