Uses
Meftal (Mefenamic Acid) is known as a fenamate NSAID and it is used for alleviating pain which is mild to moderate in nature. It is also used to treat primary dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia, arthritis (including osteoarthritis), toothaches, headaches and pain caused by other conditions. This analgesic medicine's therapeutic benefits are achieved by affecting and inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are lipid compounds that are derived from arachidonic acid. These prostaglandins are responsible for mediating the inflammatory response, and can promote inflammation. Antipyretic (fever reducing) properties are also exhibited by this medicine.
Dosage and Administration
Meftal (Mefenamic Acid) tablets are swallowed whole with water, and are taken either with or else after food. Adult patients may be told by their doctor to take 500mg (1 tablet) 3 times per day. Patients should note that this might differ, based on individual factors and you will need to listen carefully to the instructions of your doctor. If excess menstrual bleeding is being treated, the doctor may advise starting treatment on the first day that the excessive bleeding occurs. In all cases, doctors will advise using the minimum effective dose for the shortest possible period of time, so as to avoid side effects.
