Uses
Nicotinell TTS 20 (Nicotine) patches are used alongside behavioural modification therapy to help people quit smoking or to make it easier for them to reduce the amount smoked in preparation for giving up cigarettes. Smokers may experience withdrawal symptoms from nicotine when stopping (such as feeling irritable, poor concentration and headaches), as well as cravings for cigarettes. Nicotine replacement therapy (also called NRT) is often used to lessen these cravings and relieve withdrawal symptoms by providing transdermal nicotine to the bloodstream by means of an adhesive patch. This helps to greatly improve the chances of quitting smoking.
Dosage and Administration
Nicotinell TTS 20 (Nicotine) patches contain 35mg and the usual absorption rate in a period of 24 hours is 14mg. This particular strength of patch is referred to as step 2, and doctors usually recommend that patients who smoke less than 20 cigarettes start out with this patch (those who smoke in excess of 20 cigarettes may be told to use the step 1 patches, which are stronger, before using step 2). Light smokers may be instructed to use step 2 for weeks 1 to 4 of treatment, and then to switch to step 3 patches (which are lighter) for weeks 5 to 12. One patch should be removed from the package and applied to skin that is clean and dry, and preferably without hair. After 24 hours, a new patch should be applied. Follow the instructions that your doctor gives you with regard to how long treatment is needed for.
