Uses
Nizral (Ketoconazole) is an antifungal medication. It is commonly prescribed to treat various different infections caused by fungus. These infections can affect any part of the body, such as the throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and nails. This medicine works by preventing and slowing the growth of the fungi. Other conditions for which doctors may prescribe this drug include treating protozoal infections, high calcium levels or Cushing's syndrome.

Dosage and Administration
You must take Nizral (Ketoconazole) tablets exactly as directed by your doctor. It is possible to take this medication with or without food, however if taken with food, the chances of a stomach upset are greatly reduced. The most commonly prescribed dosage is one tablet per day, however, this may differ for certain patients, and patients must only take the amount their doctor tells them to take. Treatment can last from several weeks to several months, depending on how long it takes to completely treat the infection. Medical tests may be required by your doctor to determine whether or not the infection has been fully treated. Do not stop treatment unless told to do so by your doctor, as this may cause your infection to return.

Side effects
Treatment with Nizral (Ketoconazole) tablets may cause some side effects, including:

• Headache
• Spinning sensation
• Inflammation of the breasts
• An itchy sensation affecting the skin
• Lack of interest in sexual intercourse

If any serious adverse reactions occur, immediate medical attention is required. Examples include depression, suicidal thoughts, numbness, bruising or bleeding and weakness. In addition to the aforementioned serious reactions, other side effects may occur. See your doctor straight away if this happens.

Precautions
In rare cases, this drug has caused serious problems affecting the liver. In some patients, the prescribing doctor may need to monitor the patient's liver function. Alcohol use must be avoided while taking this drug, as it can increase the risk of severe liver problems.

High doses of this medication can cause adrenal insufficiency, decreased testosterone levels and a reduced sperm count. Discuss all the risks of treatment with your doctor before you start taking this medication.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Nizral (Ketoconazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
