Uses
Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole) is a topical antifungal cream which is widely used in the treatment of a wide range of skin infections caused by fungi, including pityriasis versicolor, seborrhoeic dermatitis, ringworm, jock itch, athlete's foot, as well as being used externally for symptoms of vaginal thrush. Other candida skin infections are also treated with this product.
It is considered effective against a type of fungus called malassezia furfur (also called pityrosporum). This fungus is the cause of many common skin infections. By blocking ergosterol synthesis in the cell membrane of the fungus, this cream stops the growth of the fungus and helps to treat the symptoms of the infection.
Dosage and Administration
Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole) is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, and the application procedure differs slightly depending on the condition being treated. Your doctor will provide you with more precise instructions. Adults treating tinea corporis (ringworm) may be instructed to apply the cream to the area affected (as well as the immediate surrounding area) once per day for a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
Patients affected by tinea pedis (athlete's foot) may be directed to continue treatment for 4 to 6 weeks. Doctors sometimes tell adults affected by seborrhoeic dermatitis to apply the cream twice per day for a period of 4 weeks. Other conditions may need different treatment periods or frequency of application, and patients should always follow the instructions that their doctor gives them.
Side effects
Topical application of Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole) for the treatment of fungal skin infections may cause side effects, such as skin irritation or a mild burning sensation. Some patients may experience contact dermatitis. If any side effects occur, see your doctor. Seek medical attention immediately if any severe reactions occur.
Precautions
Patients who have been recently treated for seborrhoeic dermatitis with a corticosteroid that is potent in nature may be instructed by their doctor to wait for a period of 2 weeks prior to commencing treatment, as this antifungal cream can increase the sensitivity of the skin to the corticosteroid.
The hands must be thoroughly washed after application of this cream.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
