Uses
Q300 (Quinine Sulphate) is an alkaloid which exhibits multiple medicinal properties. It is primarily used as an antimalarial, as it can attack and destroy the malaria parasites. In general, doctors recommend it for use in the treatment of plasmodium falciparum malaria which is not complicated, and leading experts have stated that it can work for treating malaria infections which have occurred in areas of chloroquine resistance. Malaria is caused by infected mosquitoes biting a human and transmitting the parasite to that person's blood.
Once in the blood, the parasites make their way to the liver, where they increase in numbers before being released back into the blood. The antimalarial action of this medicine involves blocking the plasmodium parasites from synthesizing proteins and nucleic acid. It can also block glycolysis (the process in which glucose is converted into pyruvate so as to supply the parasites with energy) and it even exhibits other mechanisms of action. All of this can help to treat a malaria infection. Some doctors have also used it to treat nocturnal leg cramps.
Dosage and Administration
Q300 (Quinine Sulphate) is provided as 300mg strength film coated tablets. The doctor in charge of treatment will conduct a medical examination so that the right dosage can be calculated. Doctors may sometimes instruct adult patients undergoing treatment for falciparum malaria to administer 600mg (equal to 2 tablets) at 8 hour intervals. Treatment may need to continue for 7 days. However, in certain cases, individualisation of the dosage may be needed, so patients are advised to closely follow the directions provided by their doctor at all times.
